3 Effective Keys to Cultivating Inner Peace

Written by METAmorphosis – aka @eyEVOLVing

In this article, my goal is to take this seemingly difficult subject and break it down into 3 simple keys. Many people talk about “finding inner peace” but I think that one must cultivate inner peace within themselves. In the busy world and culture that we live in, it is easy to feel lost and confused at times. I would like to give you a few keys to change your perspective and empower you.

“Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.” – Gautama Buddha

1) Be Here Now

The first key to cultivating inner peace is to be here, now. It is important to let go of any worries from your past and any concerns you have regarding your future. Do not dwell in the past or be anxious about the future, simply be fully here in the present moment. The easiest way to bring your complete awareness to the present moment is to bring your attention to your breath. Focus on your breath, inhaling deeply and exhaling completely, letting go of any fears, worries, or concerns you may have and replacing them with gratitude for what is now.

2) Gratitude

The next key to cultivating inner peace is to personify an attitude of gratitude. Gratitude is one of the highest vibrations that a human is able to embody among unconditional love, truth, forgiveness, and joy. Instead of stressing, start counting your blessings.

One straightforward way to start being more grateful is to keep a gratitude journal. Each day write in your journal a list of things that you are grateful for in your life. Another way to express and fill yourself with the energy of gratitude is to write letters of gratitude to those who are close to you or have had a significant impact in your life. Writing letters of gratitude can increase happiness of both the recipient and the giver for extended periods of time.

There has been a lot of research on the psychological benefits of gratitude which include increased levels of happiness, a more optimistic outlook on life, and inner peace. For more information on some of the research regarding gratitude please have a look at this article. Start expressing your gratitude for what you have now and watch a new attitude towards life unfurl and flourish. As you continue to live with an attitude of gratitude, you will attract more things in your life to be grateful for.

3) Forgiveness

Forgiveness is the last but certainly not least important key to cultivating inner peace. It is not only important to forgive others for any actions that may have hurt us either intentionally or unintentionally, it is also important for us to be able to forgive ourselves. Often times we are far too hard on ourselves, especially by holding ourselves to extreme expectations.

We must learn to forgive ourselves if we want to be at peace with ourselves. Holding on to anger or resentment is a heavy burden for the heart to carry. Forgiveness is very freeing and it is key to releasing both parties from karmic debt. When we forgive others we allow healing to occur and we allow ourselves to move on.
